As the North High School huskies receive their diplomas this year, the occasion will be notably exciting for one student in particular. The J Murphy STEM Scholarship, an impactful scholarship established in 2016 with the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation, is a unique opportunity available only to Eau Claire Area School District students. The Foundation is thrilled to announce the 2018’s recipient of the scholarship: Thidarat Yang, North High School, Class of 2018.
The scholarship was founded by the generosity of an anonymous donor with family roots in the area and an interest in helping students pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). Each year, one graduating ECASD senior will be selected to receive an incredible $10,000 scholarship to apply toward their college tuition and fees. In addition, the scholarship is renewable for up to four years, for a total possible funding of $40,000 per recipient.
Ms. Yang will begin her studies in engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in the fall, and is overjoyed to be selected for this scholarship. “I'm grateful about the many opportunities this will provide me.” The financial burden of post-secondary education can be a heavy load, and Ms. Yang is tremendously grateful for this support. “This will help me a lot financially and will allow me to focus more on my education!”
Ms. Yang was one of many remarkable candidates who applied for the scholarship, and came highly recommended. North High School Chemistry teacher, Kara Davis, glowed about how talented and dedicated Ms. Yang has been in the classroom, sharing that “she is an intelligent and hard-working student who strives to achieve at the highest level.” Ms. Davis went on to share that Ms. Yang is also active and engaged outside of the classroom. “She participates with DECA and our Japanese and math clubs, and participates in Gear Up and Blugold Beginnings.”
Careers in STEM fields are some of the quickest growing today and are among the most popular career choices for area students. The J Murphy STEM scholarship will support one outstanding student each year as she or he pursues a career in a STEM field. Ms. Yang was thrilled to be honored as the 2018 recipient for the J Murphy STEM Scholarship, and is looking forward to her studies in STEM as a means of giving back. “Chemical engineers create products and solve technological problems to provide the best solutions to a problem. They improve everyday life. I want to study chemical engineering to improve the quality of life.”
